Paralegal (Student)
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is an ongoing expression of interest for law students in their 4th or 5th year of their LLB or JD at the University of Tasmania. We take on paralegals on a part-time basis throughout the year, with flexibility around semester commitments and exams.
What we are looking for:
- Currently enrolled in 4th or 5th year of a law degree at the University of Tasmania (or equivalent)
- Strong academic record and genuine interest in legal practice
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities
- A collaborative, professional attitude — and a willingness to ask questions
- Previous office or legal experience is an advantage, but not essential
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a paralegal at Advocate Lawyers you will:
- Assist solicitors with research, drafting, and file preparation across multiple practice areas
- Prepare court documents, correspondence, and file notes
- Attend client appointments and, where appropriate, court hearings with supervising solicitors
- Manage file organisation and matter administration in our practice management system (Clio)
- Liaise with clients, courts, and third parties under solicitor supervision
The breadth of our practice means you will gain exposure to matters you would not see as a first-year graduate at a single-specialty firm.

ABOUT OUR FIRM
Advocate Lawyers is a busy, full-service law firm with offices in Hobart and in Kingston. We practise across family law, conveyancing and property, wills and estate planning, estate administration, criminal law, commercial law, litigation, and employment law.
